On Sunday, March 8, people around the world celebrated International Women’s Day. Tracing back to 1909, the holiday commemorates women’s fight for liberation and equality around the globe. The first reported Women’s Day event was held on February 28, 1909 by the Socialist Party of America (SPA) at the suggestion of Theresa Malkiel, a suffragist and head of the Woman’s National Committee of the SPA.

To celebrate, members of the Voice staff gave shoutouts to some of the important women in their lives.

“I’ll shout out my mom. She was a mortician when I was a kid, and she made me super into science. She’s the smartest person I know, and she’s a really cool lady,” Trent Patton ’26.

“Shout out to my sisters who helped raise me! They have taught me so much and I still learn from them every day,” Gianna Hayes ’26.

“Shoutout to my Girlfriend Ace for always being there for me no matter what and also for doing amazing at everything,” Micah Sutton ’29.

“I want to shout out my great grandma. I just saw her again when I went back home to Nigeria for December. She’s about 110, and she’s living proof that my enemies will die before me,” Nwanne Eke ’26.
