Entering into the month of March, the Wooster’s men’s lacrosse team was undefeated. They won four games against rival teams, but on their latest trip to Michigan, they experienced  their first two defeats of the season. These defeats were dealt to them by Calvin University and Hope College on March 6 and 7, respectively. “We showed some great lacrosse and made smart plays,” Alec Siegel ’29 said. “But we couldn’t quite put it together for a full game.”

The first game of the trip was against Calvin University and played in Grand Rapids, Michigan in front of 287 spectators. With the Scots’ previous winning streak, the match-up was electric. Both teams battled to see who would remain undefeated and who would come away with their first loss. The final score was 14 to 13, with the Calvin University Knights scoring the winning goal in overtime.

After a lightning delay, the battle of the undefeated burst to life when Owen Thompson ’29 scored the first goal for Wooster with an assist from Lane Kellogg ’26. After 8 minutes, the Knights scored their first point, which was quickly followed by a second. The Fighting Scots responded by scoring another point with one minute left on the clock. At the end of the first quarter, the score was tied 2 to 2. The next quarter of play saw Wooster score a total of 5 points, with the Scots’ defense only allowing the Knights to score 1 point. This pushed the score to 7-3, putting the Scots in the lead by a comfortable margin. The 3rd quarter saw Calvin crawling back to score 4 points. The Scots gained 1 point thanks to Thompson scoring a goal with help from Will Crane ’28. The quarter ended in a score of 8-7, with Wooster in the lead. The final quarter of the game saw some explosive plays from both schools. Wooster scored 5 points and Calvin scored 6 at the end of the 4th quarter, tying the score at 13-13. The Scots ultimately lost when Calvin University scored a winning shot 2 minutes into overtime. Siegel said, “We had a ton of chances that just weren’t falling into our favor.”

The Fighting Scots then took on the Hope College Dutch, ultimately losing 14 to 6. The start of the game saw a competitive first quarter with the Scots scoring 3 points and Hope College scoring 4, meaning the Scots were within striking distance of the lead. However, during the next quarter of play, the Dutch slammed Wooster with 4 points. The Scots managed to get 1 point during this quarter, scored by Rowan Piani ’26 with an assist by Kellogg. Wooster’s defense denied Hope College any new points during the third quarter. Wooster would strike the net with a point scored by Thompson and Piani. The final quarter saw the Dutch score 6 points with Wooster managing to get away with 1 point. The final score would be 14 to 6 with the Scots suffering their second defeat of the season.

The first game against Calvin University showed how well the Scots can perform on the attack, while the game against Hope College also showed the strength of the Scots defense. Despite the first two losses of the men’s lacrosse season, the Fighting Scots are still poised with a strong season ahead of them. “I’m confident that if we play our game and dictate the field, we can be very dangerous for the remainder of the season and conference play,” Siegel concluded.

The College of Wooster Men’s lacrosse team will be regrouping with a trip to Texas to start their spring trip with a match against UMass Boston on March 15. Go Scots!
