The Wooster women’s golf team ended their season this past weekend with a fourth place at the North Coast Atlantic Conference Championships. The women started off their season strong in the fall, placing first overall at the Ohio Wesleyan Invitational in October and placing high at the Wittenberg Pat Clouse Invitational and at the Eva Shorb Weiskopf Invitation that Wooster hosts.

Some individual highlights of this season include senior Sharmeen Chinoy’s individual second place at the Citadel competition in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, and junior Hannah Buzolits’ individual first place at the Wooster Spring Invitational. Buzolits, who nabbed this top spot out of 70 competitors, was then named NCAC Golfer-of-the-Week.

“I felt very confident off the tee and with my irons and that confidence transitioned to my short game, which was very consistent,” said Buzolits. “I was relaxed the whole time and just focused on the shot at my feet and not the end product.”

Last weekend the women played in the first round of NCAC Championship April 23 and 24 in Streetsboro, Ohio. This past weekend of April 30 and May 1, the women competed in Wooster, Ohio, for the second round of the Championship.

Emily Howerton ’17 led the team, placing 15th, followed by Mallory Stack ’17 who placed 17th. Close behind was Chinoy, who finished off her Wooster career placing 19th. The team shot a 288 over par against seven teams and 32 competitors.

Buzolits, speaking for the feelings of the team, said, “We tried to stay in the moment and play the game we knew how to play. This season was arguably the most successful season in program history.”

The Wooster men’s golf team also ended their season this past weekend playing in the NCAC Championship. The men faced nine other teams and 50 competitors, ending the tournament with 104 over par and placing fifth.

The men played well, with a standout performance from Marcus Carano ’16 who shot a one-under-par 71 on Saturday and a 75 on Sunday, earning him seventh place overall. Carano has been a leader on the team for some time and was able to comment on the growth of the program.

“I think our program has gotten much stronger over four years,” he said. “Overall I am leaving a much more talented line-up than the one I came into four years ago. I hope our current underclassmen keep working hard and realize how much potential they really have.” Carano ended this season averaging three-over-par.

The younger talent is apparent, as some underclassman on the team had notable performances. Charlie Holt ’19 tied for 24th, and Andrew DeLaat ’19 and Brendan Tully ’18 tied for 28th.

Scott Sears ’17 summed up the team’s feelings, stating, “This year we were able to welcome five freshmen to the team who have had a significant impact in our lineup. Under great leadership from our captain, Marcus Carano, the team has really taken shape and our potential moving forward is high. Our hope is to continue climbing the conference rankings and to fill the leadership role that Marcus has left us as he graduates.”
