After a rather disappointing 2010-11 season for the women’s basketball team, they are off to a more promising start this season. The young squad took to the court 20 times last season and accumulated two wins. This season, the team has started with great enthusiasm and a driven mindset.

On Nov. 15, the Scots kicked off their season at home against John Carroll University. In the hard-fought affair, the women fell 60-53. Although the Scots failed to win the home opener, they showed great signs of improvement from last year’s 82-51 loss against John Carroll.

This year, two main contributors against the Blue Streaks were Jessica Wingen ’13 and Suvi Puripattarappan ’14, who both scored 11 points with 14 and two rebounds respectively.

After the disappointing loss, the women participated in the Nan Nichols Classic hosted by The College of Wooster in the Timken Gymnasium. First, they played against the University of Northwestern Ohio in a heated contest.

Led by Puripattarapan’s 17 points, the Scots defeated the Racers 78-70. Other notable factors in the game were Sarah Abboud ’12 (16 points), Wingen (11 rebounds) and Karley Walker ’14 (five assists).

The next day, the Scots hosted Muskingum College in the second game of the Nan Nichols Classic. After an extremely slow start, the Scots began to fight back in the fourth quarter.

Muskingum entered half-time with a 14 point lead. However, from the start of the second half, the  women fought to come back. At one point with three minutes remaining in regulation, the Fighting Scots pulled within seven points.

Unfortunately, Wooster could not complete the comeback, and lost the game 57-46.

The team’s improvement from last year has opened many eyes within the conference, as the women prepare to take on Hiram College  on Dec. 3 in their second conference matchup of the season.
