The College of Wooster men’s soccer team scored with six minutes remaining in double overtime to prevail over Earlham College. On a sunny Saturday, the Scots (4-2-1) welcomed the Quakers of Earlham College to Carl Dale Memorial field.
The Quakers (0-8) dictated the pace of play in the first half, registering 9 shots. Earlham got on the board first after Corey Campbell, situated near the back goalpost, knocked in a teammate’s cross. Wooster had a few opportunities in the half, but could not convert, as the Earlham goalkeeper made three saves.
In the second half, the Scots became more aggressive and began to possess the ball in Earlham’s defensive half for longer periods of time. This shift in possession paid off when Jonathon Fox ’12 delivered a corner-kick to Noah Wagemann ’14, who knotted the score at 1-1.
Two minutes after the equalizer an Earlham player was issued his second yellow card, resulting in an ejection from the game. Playing a man up and with the momentum squarely on their side, Wooster continued its aggressive offensive play. The Scots could not find the game-winner in the remaining minutes and the game headed to overtime.
The first overtime period saw few legitimate chances, as each team dug in defensively. Wooster had quality opportunities throughout the second overtime, ending the game in the 105th minute. A scramble occurred in front of the Earlham goal when the ball found the foot of Liam Pender ’14, who found the back of the net with a low shot, giving the Scots their fourth victory of the year.
In goal, all-NCAC honoree Taylor Takacs ‘12 recorded six saves and the win. The men will open North Coast Athletic Conference play on Homecoming against Wabash.
The women’s soccer team hosted John Carroll University (4-4) early last week in a back-and-forth match.
Paige Piper ’13 recorded a first half hat-trick, scoring her first goal just four minutes into the game off of a Michele Ring ’13 assist. Piper would again find the back of the net less than ten minutes later, heading in her second goal of the day. Fifteen minutes before halftime, Piper scored an unassisted goal, giving the Scots a 3-0 lead heading into the second-half.
It looked as if the Scots would blow out the visiting Blue Streaks before Kristen Profeta scored off of a rebound in the 64th minute. From there, John Carroll took advantage of a lapse in Wooster’s defensive communication, scoring their second goal of the game 34 seconds later, making the score 3-2. Forced up against a wall, the Scots failed to respond as the Blue Streaks added the equalizer in the 71th minute.
With all the momentum on their side, it seemed John Carroll would triumph. However, Bri Fulmer ’12 converted a penalty kick ten minutes later. Piper would add an insurance goal eight minutes later, giving her four goals on the game and tying the single-game school record for goals.
Ring made 6 saves in goal for the Scots and recorded her fourth win of the year. The women will be in action again when they welcome Allegheny College to Carl Dale Memorial Field on Oct. 5in an NCAC contest.
