The men’s lacrosse team (4-7, 1-2 NCAC) found its rhythm last Wednesday when it defeated the Oberlin Yeomen 9-5. The game remained close throughout the first half as the Fighting Scots and the Yeomen traded goals until the final five seconds of the half, when Wooster’s Joe Suliman ’11 scored, putting the Scots up 5-3.

Early in the third quarter, however, this lead quickly disappeared. Oberlin’s Connor Jackson† and Dylan Holmes both scored, tying the match up at 5.

Fortunately for the Scots, this tie did not last long. A Wooster goal by Jake Bernard ’14 started a 4-0 scoring run that eventually led to a Wooster victory.

Following Bernard’s goal, Patrick Schlick ’13 and Suliman each added a goal to give the Fighting Scots an 8-5 lead going into the fourth quarter of play.

The Scots’ victory was topped off with a goal from Matt Rubin ’12 in the middle of the fourth. Despite out-shooting the Scots 15-7 in the second half, the Yeomen (2-8) were unable to put any points on the board throughout most of the third quarter and the entire fourth quarter.

On Saturday, the women’s lacrosse team (9-3, 4-0 NCAC) continued its dominant winning streak of eight games in a row by defeating Kenyon College 12-5.

The Scots started off the game slowly, falling behind to the Kenyon ladies 2-4 midway through the first half.

Despite their initial struggles, the Scots gained momentum at the end of the half when Clare Nelson-Johnson ’13 and Madison Carey ’12 each scored by converting free-position shots. Eileen Barrer ’11 finished off the half with a goal, giving the Scots a 5-4 lead at the half.

The Fighting Scots dominated the second half of the match. The third quarter began with goals by both Barrer and Carey within the first five minutes of play.

These goals were followed up by one from Cassie Greenbaum ’14 on an assist from Barrer.

Carey then scored again, making the score 9-4 with just under 20 minutes to play in the half. Despite this offensive explosion from the Scots, their defense remained in tact. Keyon struggled to move the ball into Wooter’s defensive end and was unable to score a goal untill the 10:13 mark late in the second half.

The Fighting Scots were led by Barrer, who tied her career-high with five goals, in addition to Carey and Nelson-Johnson, who each produced a hat trick. Before the match† the team celebrated “Senior Day”, recognizing Barrer along with Nina Dine ’11, Emily Meyer ’11 and Katie Smart ’11. Keyon was led by Emily Nichols who scored twice and Leah Sack who had one goal and two assists. The Scots’ goalie, Shawna Ferris ’13, had an impressive performance with seven saves and three groundballs.

The women’s lacrosse team faced Allegheny College after press time on Thursday and the men’s team will face Wittenberg University today at 7 p.m.
