The Wooster tennis teams have been on a rough skid over the past week of competitions. Last Thursday, the women’s team traveled to Delaware, Ohio to take on the Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops (4-7, 1-3 NCAC).

In singles play, the Battling Bishops defeated the first four Fighting Scots. Pam Quigney defeated Ashley Stockwell ’12 6-2, 6-3, and Emily Kiourtsis defeated Kelsey Jenkins ’12 6-3, 6-3. Boo Flynn ’12 had a much closer match, losing 6-1, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3 to Jordan Leslie, and Becky Simon defeated Lauren Grimanis ’12 6-2, 6-2.

Wooster was able to salvage the last two singles matches, with Suzanne Hamby ’11 defeating Mackenzie Conway 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5) and Lauren Gilliss ’13 defeating Mackenzie Keffalos 6-0, 6-2. Doubles competition went similarly to the singles competition. Kiourtsis and Quigney defeated Stockwell and Jenkins 8-6.

Leslie and Simon defeated Grimanis and Hamby 8-2. Although Gilliss and Cory Smith ’13 were able to defeat Conway and Keffalos 8-5, Ohio Wesleyan came away from the match with an impressive 6-3 overall decision.

On Saturday, the Scots traveled to Gambier, Ohio to face rival Wittenberg University (16-5, 2-3 NCAC) on a neutral court. Stockwell, Jenkins and Flynn lost the first three singles matches, but Wooster recovered in the fourth and fifth matches. Grimanis defeated Rachel Bundy 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 before Hamby defeated Kristin Wright 6-4, 6-2. However, Gilliss was defeated 6-2, 6-3 by Rachel Norman, and the Tigers swept the doubles competition to finish the day with a 7-2 mark.

The team’s woes were amplified on Monday when it went up against sixth-ranked Denison University (14-4, 6-0 NCAC) in Granville, Ohio.

Wooster was unable to win a single set against the Big Red, although Grimanis and Hamby came the closest with each losing a 6-4 set in singles competition.

In doubles, Stockwell and Jenkins and Flynn and Hamby were each defeated 8-0 in the first two matches. Smith and Gilliss lost 8-1 to Jane Lent and Lilianna Broussalian to complete Denison’s 9-0 overall victory.

The Scot women (7-10, 0-5 NCAC) will finish regular season play tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. in Oberlin, Ohio against Allegheny College (10-6, 1-2 NCAC).

The men’s tennis team (4-11, 0-2 NCAC) went to Gambier on Sunday to take on Kenyon College (14-3, 3-0 NCAC), which is ranked seventh nationally and is the top-ranked team in the region. The Lords swept the Scots 9-0, never winning by less than four points in either singles or doubles competition for the day.

Nick Biniker ’14 and David Greetham ’13 did the best in singles play, losing 6-2, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-2, respectively.

In doubles, Biniker and Paul Thomas ’14 were defeated 8-0, Landon Moore ’14 and Alex Turner ’13 lost 8-2, and Greetham and Sam Susanin ’13 were defeated 8-2.

Wooster’s scheduled game on Saturday against Capital University was canceled due to rain. The men played at Denison on Wednesday after press time and at home against Wittenberg yesterday.

The team’s next match is tomorrow at home against the conference opponent Allegheny College Gators (9-4, 0-1 NCAC). The match starts at 1 p.m.
