On Monday, April 7, a white glow enveloped the familiar confines of Wooster Country Club’s golf course. A sea of snow accompanied the women’s golf team’s participation in the Eva Shorb Weiskopf Invitational, causing the first day to be cancelled due to weather conditions. Coming off the heels of a second place finish in last weekend’s Mount Union Invitational, the Scots were keen to continue their efforts. The field was composed of multiple competitive teams, including Allegheny, Malone, Muskingum, Otterbein and Wittenberg — a competitive scene that left Wooster hoping to drive home a victory.
“It is always a great time competing at our home course for the spring season,” Paige Nicely ’27 said. “Many people come to Wooster Country Club and find it difficult to play the course, especially the greens, so we get to go in with that experience and intuition.”
Ally Siewert ’25 led the charge for the Scots, scoring an 83 that left her tied for second at the conclusion of the tournament. The senior carded Wooster’s only birdie of the day on the course’s par-5 thirteenth hole. She finished strong with an assertive back 9 consisting of a birdie and 3 pars, coming in at 4 over par.
Next was Abigail Haywood ’27 who placed ninth, debuting a score of 86 — with much of her success coming in the round’s final 6 holes with a 2-over-par average. Haywood’s play culminated with 2 consecutive pars on the course’s final 2 holes.
“It is always nice to play a home tournament though this one was difficult due to the weather,” Haywood said. “The snow didn’t impact the tournament as much as the mud. Due to all the rain, the course was a muddy mess and that increased the difficulty.”
Morgan Erdmann ’27 found the team’s third place position with a score of 90, tying her for thirteenth overall. The sophomore delivered a well-rounded performance with 2 of her pars coming on par-5s, one of which was the course’s final hole.
Next, Nicely rounded out the Scots’ scoring members with a score of 95 that placed her twenty-third. Nicely delivered pars on multiple holes throughout the front 9 of the tournament and an additional one on the thirteenth hole. Maddie Moran ’25 capped off the lineup with a score of 96 to place twenty-fourth with a performance that delivered numerous pars across the competition.
Outside of Wooster’s team lineup, Lizzy Hohman ’27 led the team’s individual competitors with a score of 96, parring 2 of the course’s 4 par-5 holes. Hohman was followed sequentially by Sarah Buchholtz ’28, Serena Grenga ’27 and Alexis Neal ’26 to round out the individual performances.
By the day’s end, the team achieved a podium position, coming in at third and once more defining themselves as strong competitors both within the conference and beyond. Nicely emphasized the team’s support of one another as an important component of their competitive attitude: “We as a team support each other in non-traditional ways, as golf is a very individual sport. Like, as we pass each other from far away we will wave and give thumbs up for encouragement.”
The Fighting Scots will continue their campaign this weekend at the IU Kokomo Spring Shootout at Wildcat Creek Golf Course in Indiana. Go Scots!
