I am from long walks around the farm
spent dreaming of infinity.
I’m from every castle I ever built,
thousands of blocks stacked up high.
I’m from my mom’s laptop,
where I did and missed so much.
I’m from every magic spell I cast,
and the contest to pretend the hardest.
I am from bickering in the back seat
on the drive to our dad’s house.
(I didn’t start it, just to be clear.)
I’m from lakeside sand in summer
and warming firewood in winter.
I’m from dragging my feet on beach and carpet
even though I should love the sensation.
I’m from the games my brother played
and the worlds held inside for him to enjoy.
I am from two steps behind the start line
and losing by a single step
I’m from all the mistakes that I never made
and the ones I made that weren’t my own.
I’m from high up in my watchtower,
readying myself to try to start pretending.
I’m from long walks but I dragged my feet,
so I never left the place that I am from,
That city that doesn’t exist.

Where I’m From
I am from words,
From books and from literature.
I am from the stories I read as a child.
(Noble princes saving damsels in distress.
Talking gnomes and spiteful elves.)
I am from the poetry that sat on our dining room shelves,
Prose that stood patiently closed,
Waiting to be taken down,
Opened, read.
And to someday
Be made into my own.
