Excerpt from “My Growing Collection” 2025 chapbook

by Scarlett Svoboda ’28

Water scales the horizon in hopes of finding a resting home.

It crashes at once to answer the calls of the moon,

meanders between rocks and waits

understanding its place for fate’s foaming waves.

It wanders in hopes the roaming fish will drone on

and catch their quips by the moist and mossy lawn.

Catch their quips as they wait for the following dawn.

Water catches the eyes of humans who sing for swans

and puncture their own wings.

Ringing with passion and beginning to make

their contemplative collections.

Water washes their hands and the plans of the future,

grasping for respite and finding that

the ocean can hold its greatest treasures

from lakes and rivers and springs…
