I worked with Viewpoints Editor Zach Perrier ’25 to dish out the best and the worst of Lowry’s offerings at the Kitchen Table and Mom’s stations for Super Bowl Sunday. To my surprise, the food was more general “tailgate” themed than themed around the fact that the Super Bowl took place in New Orleans. Regardless, we filled our plates with food and got to tasting.
As far as first impressions go: Lemongrass was being used as primarily a “sauce station,” that featured seven sauces. Sauce connoisseur Perrier had this to say about each sauce offered by the dining hall (all tasted with a plain boneless wing):
- Garlic parmesan: 3.5/5 (“It’s good.”)
- Creamy sriracha: 4/5 (“It’s quite spicy, actually –– for my white midwest sensibility.”)
- Traditional BBQ: 2.5/5 (Not a quote: but passed the Dairy Queen blizzard test –– held upside down and did not move.)
- Buffalo: 3/5
- Texas Pete hot: 3/5 (“A little sweeter than the Buffalo sauce, but not that spicy for a hot sauce.”)
- Pineapple (?): 2.75/5 (“Has an unpleasant aftertaste.”)
- Carolina gold: 4.5/5 (“Big fan.”)
Perrier also agreed that the boneless wings were really just chicken nuggets, but we both agreed that it was best that both the bone-in and boneless wings were merely good because they did not have sauce on them, so you could pick your sauce as you pleased at the sauce station at Lemongrass. This also offered a few more options: like your wings saucier than the average joe? Sauce away. Like them bone dry? This was the day for you.
Beyond all the chicken wings offered, we also sampled the chips and dip with corn tortilla chips (usually served at the taqueria lunch week) and spinach and artichoke dip. Although the dip wasn’t extremely visually appealing, it was up to Perrier’s standards.
Last but not least –– macaroni and cheese was also offered. This is always a large selling point at Wooster because college students love mac and cheese. Perrier and I both thought the mac and cheese was delicious.
This brought on a more intense conversation about mac and cheese at the dining hall. Sometimes, it’s too dry. Other times, it can be too watery. We felt like this was a happy medium between the mac and cheeses usually offered at the dining hall.
Overall, Lowry’s Super Bowl meal was very delicious meal for a very interesting game. Go Birds (only for this game –– I’m a Steelers fan)!
