Scot Council held their general assembly meeting in the Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI) Lounge on Oct. 16 at 7 p.m.  These events are always open to the entire student body.

The budget committee will host office hours from 4 to 5 p.m. on Thursdays and discussed new funds requests for Neuroscience Club and Scots in Harmony.

The conduct committee discussed a name change for the Scot’s Key, which would change the current name to the Student Handbook. The committee is planning to bring more awareness to the Scot’s Key (or, the Student Handbook) in the coming months by highlighting different sections of the Key in a weekly Sway and begin working with marketing to do more promotions for the document. The new Scot’s Key will be available and live in a few weeks. The committee is planning to talk to Dean Jen Bowen, the dean for curriculum and academic engagement, about sending key parts of the Scot’s Key to different First Year Seminar (FYS) classes.

The Social Justice and Equity committee discussed where the Black Student Association (BSA) lounge will move to due to the closing of its original home in Douglass Hall. The current plan is for the lounge to be relocated to Babcock basement. The Women of Images house was also briefly discussed but no further action was taken nor future plans mentioned.

Director of Residence Life Jonathon Reynolds requested Scot Council’s input on how Resident Assistants (RAs) should communicate with students as well as the RA training system.

The executive committee discussed the upcoming Missions and Outcomes meeting next week on Wednesday Oct. 25, beginning at 5:15 p.m.  Missions and Outcomes has historically been a place for students to voice their concerns directly to members of the board of trustees, who vote on official college business. Scot Council will also be holding a lunch in The Alley that is connected to Missions and Outcomes Thursday Oct. 26.

The racial and ethnic diversity constituents talked with the Equity, Inclusion and Diversity Coordinator about the need for more sacred spaces across campus and reiterated the moving of the BSA student lounge.

The gender and sexuality diversity constituents discussed the Q-Space, a space currently housed in the basement of Compton Hall. The constituents had discussions with Sexuality & Gender Inclusion (SGI) about moving the space to Luce; however, the Q-Space’s location will remain the same for the time being.

The international diversity constituents discussed international events such as the upcoming culture show, international education week and planning Thanksgiving break for international students. The constituents also spoke with the International Students Association (ISA) on their upcoming meeting with Marjorie Shamp to offer Thanksgiving grocery bags.

The accessibility constituents discussed the possibility of the Underground (UG) being moved to a different location due to accessibility concerns. This concern was cited to President Anne McCall. The constituents also discussed the upcoming meeting scheduled with the Disability Advocacy & Support Alliance (DASA) and the discussion of the placement of an elevator in Wishart.

There is no coverage of last week’s (Oct. 9) Scot Council general assembly as the Voice was unable to send a reporter and Scot Council was unable to provide the meeting minutes, citing a “technical problem.”
