The Fighting Scots field hockey team traveled to Virginia this past Saturday to face off against Sweet Briar College in an out-of-conference match. Coming off of a 5-0 victory versus Nazareth University and subsequent 1-0 defeat against Denison, the team hoped to establish a positive record with success against the Vixens.

The game remained scoreless for most of the match with each team providing a strong line of defense throughout the first three quarters. The deadlock would eventually be broken early in the fourth quarter when Natalie Katzenmeyer ’26 tucked away her third goal of the season off an assist from Delaney Gross ’24 to give the Scots a 1-0 advantage.

Sweet Briar responded to this push with increased offensive intensity, quickly amassing numerous penalty corners and two shots shortly after Katzenmeyer’s finish. Unwilling to give up the lead, Wooster held strong on the defensive line with an impressive save from goalkeeper Cate Barkdoll ’26 before managing a multitude of last minute attacks, including two last-minute corner shots. Despite the Vixens’ daring effort, the Scots successfully held them off with Katzenmeyer stating, “Our defensive unit worked hard until the end to secure the win.” The match concluded with a scoreline of 1-0, giving the Scots their second victory of the season and netting them a positive record of 2-1.

Both teams delivered hard-fought performances with each side amassing eight shots. The Vixens outnumbered Wooster’s penalty corner attempts 9-5 yet failed to get the ball across the line from these chances. Maddie Cahillane ’27 shared a positive assessment of the team’s performance going forward stating, “We’re going to use this win to motivate us against Depauw and Earlham this weekend, going into these matches with a win is going to help the team play the best they can!” This positive sentiment was further echoed by Katzenmeyer who said, “The play we enacted for the goal was something we’ve been working on in practice, it was nice to see it implemented in a gametime situation. As a team it gave us confidence in capitalizing on offensive plays for future games.”

The Fighting Scots will look to continue their success as they go on the road this weekend to face off against Depauw University on Saturday Sept. 23rd and Earlham College on Sunday Sept. 24th.
