Jackie Carrillo was recently named to the staff of the Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI), joining as the Center’s second program coordinator. She will have a unique focus in two branches, Civic and Social Responsibility as well as International Student Services.

Carrillo, who describes herself as a “first generation college graduate and daughter of immigrant parents,” brings to the position her six years of experience working with residence life and college admissions at Texas A&M University.

“As a new member to the team, I am looking forward to contributing to services and programs the CDI provides,” stated Carrillo. “I am excited about working with students interested in service and I hope to create more opportunities for those interested in working with our immigrant communities.”

Undertaking the role within Civic and Social Responsibility, Carrillo intends to cultivate more participation through volunteerism, activism, community education, politics, philanthropy and social entrepreneurship.

Working with CDI’s International Student Services (ISS) branch, Carrillo will have the opportunity to strengthen and publicize diversified experiences of international students, global nomads and language assistants.

Along with her involvement in Civic and Social Responsibility, Carrillo will team up with the Soup and Bread Program and additionally organize events with the Intercultural Partner Program, which aims to bring together variation and difference between cultures through a focus on respect and communication.

Carrillo explained her excitement as she summarized her thoughts on the programs as good opportunities for students from multiple backgrounds to become more involved in the communities around them.

“[These programs are] another great opportunity for both our international and domestic students to become involved!” Carrillo said.

Regarding her welcome to the College and the CDI staff, Carrillo expressed her enthusiasm for her new position and described her love for the “intersectional and collaborative spirit of the CDI.”

“I hope to be a source of support for students of color and to engage our campus community with the CDI,” Carrillo said.

According to the Jan. 23 email sent from the staff of the CDI announcing her hiring to the campus, Carrillo also will be a source of contact for concerns related to the Wooster Volunteer Network houses and International Educational Week, although the email acknowledged that concerns related specifically to housing issues should continue to be directed to the Office of Residence Life in Lowry Student Center.

Carrillo joins Kim Green on the CDI staff, who was also recently hired as a program coordinator for the Center. Green works with Multicultural Student Affairs and the Office of Sexuality and Gender Inclusion.
