The competition was tough this past Saturday at the Bob Shannon Invitational in Granville, Ohio. The men’s and women’s teams both secured the seventh spot out of 10 teams, with some of those teams nationally recognized.
On Sunday, two Wooster women competed in the all-Ohio Pentathlon. Hilary Coady ’16 finished in third, and Carolyn Webster ’19 placed sixth.
From both days of competition, there were personal and school records broken. Notably, thrower Tyler Catlin ’16 broke the school and his personal record with a weight throw at 47 feet 5.75 inches.
At the all-Ohio Pentathlon, Coady tallied up 3,387 points, going beyond her previous school record at past pentathlons while surpassing other personal records on the way. Webster performed in her first pentathlon as a Scot, setting many personal records and jumping her way to second place in the high jump.
“For the Bob Shannon Invitational we showcased both the men’s and women’s DMR (distance medley relay — 1200-meter, 400-meter, 800-meter and 1600-meter) for the first time this season and they both did incredibly well,” said Brigid O’Hara ’16. Overall there were four second-place finishes
Additionally, O’Hara, Elizabeth Obi ’18 and Mallory Crane ’19 all landed within the top eight places for the triple jump event.
“We have a big group of incredibly talented freshmen that are continuously proving themselves week after week,” added O’Hara.
Jacob Denbeaux ’19, when asked about individual success, mentioned that he ran the first leg of the 1200 meter relay (a race he has never run) but the inexperience didn’t show. The relay team performed very well and earned second place with a time of 10:51.57.
After recording numerous impressive and even record-breaking times this past weekend, the Track and Field team is looking to continue their success at the All-Ohio Championships in Westerville, Ohio, this upcoming weekend.
