The Fighting Scots volleyball team had a busy Saturday away from home, facing off against long-time rival Oberlin and then head-ing back onto the court to battle it out with Earlham the same day.

Although the team struggled and ultimately lost to Oberlin, it pulled out a win against Earlham in the following match.

The Scots were off to a good start in their first match against Oberlin, setting the pace with an early 8-5 lead in the first set.

The Oberlin Yeowomen didn’t stay behind for long, eventually taking a 13-10 lead over the Fight-ing Scots. But the Wooster play-ers didn’t lose spirit, fighting hard and tying the game at 18-18 with a Webster kill.

Wooster took the lead, 21-19 after Webster’s third ace. Oberlin fought back, but Wooster main-tained the lead at 23-22 after a double block from Ashley Plassard ’19 and Savannah Moore ’16.

Ultimately, Oberlin won the first set, scoring three successive points to secure the victory.

The following two sets occurred in the same manner as the first, with Oberlin claiming victory over the Fighting Scots each time.

However, the Scots came close to victory in the final set, follow-ing Ksenia Klue ’18’s back-to-back kills, bringing the score to 23-20 before being closed out by Oberlin once more.

Although the Scots faced de-feat against Oberlin, they were able to face off against Earlham in their next match of the day and pull out a win.

The women wasted no time taking an early lead against Earlham, opening an eight-point lead. The Quakers had four suc-cessive attack errors that con-tributed to the Fighting Scots’ lead of 8-3.

Later in the match, Anna Em-mick ’17, Megan Mey ’17 and Eleri Miller ’18 added kills to their statistics, taking a 20-10 advantage over the Earlham Quakers.

Wooster’s front row controlled the pace of the set, blocking three shots over an eight-point stretch. Two of the three blocks came during a 5-0 stretch, in which the Fighting Scots scored five points and kept Earlham from adding any points to the board.

The women added another block later in the frame during a 6-0 swing, leading the Quak-ers by double digits. The Fight-ing Scots gradually pulled away from the Quakers in the final frame, with a total of seven Wooster players recording kills in the set. Webster led with a set-high four kills.

Notably, four of the women reached double-digit kills be-tween the two matches. Klue and Webster both recorded 12, Em-mick recorded 11 and Moore fol-lowed with 10.

Wooster wasn’t lacking defen-sively either. Emmick obtained 12 blocks. Jordan Murray ’18 provided a total of 19 digs for the team.

The Scots’ next match will against Wittenberg Univerisity on Saturday in Springfield, Ohio at 3 p.m.
