The Wooster men’s soccer team (3-13-1, 0-9-0 NCAC) squared off against Wabash College (13-2-3, 6-2-1 NCAC) this past Saturday, narrowly falling to the Little Giants in a 2-1 loss. Wooster led 1-0 at the end of the first half, but was unable to hold onto this advantage late in the game. Wabash scored its first goal in the 58th minute and found the net again in the 89th minute to defeat the Fighting Scots.
Wooster’s goal came from the foot of Patrick Pickering ’16, his first goal of the season, after he capitalized on a poorly played ball by Wabash. Pickering chipped the ball over the keeper in the 39th minute to put the Scots up 1-0.
All looked good for the Scots in the first half; unfortunately the second half yielded a different result. Wabash came out looking more aggressive and in the 58th minute Riley Pelton scored to tie the game. Keeping Wooster in the game was outstanding goalie play from Daniel Quinn ’16, who made 6 saves. However, with time waning Wabash went on the attack and Pelton soon found teammate Mike Gore who volleyed the ball into the net to give Wabash the lead with a mere 1:45 remaining. The Scots had an opportunity to tie it up with thirteen seconds remaining, but were unable to capitalize on their late corner kick.
“[The game] marked the end of a tumultous season,” said Pickering. “The effort was there, but now it is time to regroup and have a positive offseason.”
This was the final game of the season for the Scots, who honored seniors Phillip Charnley, Luke Collier and Zach Jergan before the game.
