The women’s golf team made history  this weekend, winning a tournament for the first time.  Sharmeen Chinoy ’16 led the Scots as she became the first College of Wooster women’s golfer in program history to medal, shooting 77 and 78.  Chinoy finished an impressive four strokes ahead of the runner-up.  For her efforts, Chinoy was also named NCAC Women’s Golfer of the Week.

Chinoy was joined by two other top-four finishers, Hannah Buzolits ’17 and Emily Howerton ’17, who both tied for third.  Buzolits shot rounds of 82 and 78, while Howerton showed her consistency, firing back-to-back rounds of 80.

Mallorey Stack ’17 and Victoria Roney ’18 also helped the team’s overall shooting scores of 177 and 178 respectively.  Competing as individuals, Leigh Yartz ’18, who finished 13th overall, and Alyssa Gilbert ’15, who finished 23rd overall, showed the depth of this impressive women’s golf team.

The Wooster men’s golf team struggled on the first day of the Ohio Athletic Conference Fall Invitational, shooting a score of 320 and finishing the day in eighth out of nine the teams.

However, a new team came to play on Monday and turned their scores around.   The team shot 301 on the second day, which helped them vault five spots ahead into a third-place finish, only 10 strokes behind first-place Otterbein (611).

The Scots were led by two top-five finishers in senior T.J. Selby ’15 and Scott Sears ’17. Selby fired rounds of 77 and 73 to finish third overall in a strong field of 62 competitors. Sears gave his best collegiate performance with rounds of 76 and 75 to finish tied for fourth overall.

Also providing strong scores on the second day despite a tough first round, were sophomore Michael Bay ’17 and first year Brenden Tully ’18.  Bay finished in a tie for 22nd with a total score of 158, but showed flashes of excellence on the second day shooting 76.  Tully, who shot 162, finished tied for 32nd overall, but helped the team immensely with his turn-around on the second day shooting 77.

Both teams have a bye this weekend.  The men will hope to translate the strong second day of this tournament into a strong two-day performance in their next tournament, the Mount Union Fall Invitational at Tannenhauf Golf Club, on Sept. 27-28.  The women’s team hopes to carry their electricity into their home tournament, the Eva Shorb Weiskopf Invitational at the Wooster Country Club, also on Sept. 27-28.
