On Saturday, the College of Wooster’s women’s lacrosse team (5-7, 5-3 NCAC) proved to be a force to be reckoned with in the NCAC as they defeated Oberlin College in a crucial 15-11 late game win.
For much of the first half against the Yeowomen, Wooster traded the lead with their hosts. Abby Szlachta ’16 gave the Scots an 8-9 lead in the closing minutes of the first half off a free position goal.
The Yeowomen answered back early in the second half by scoring two goals, putting them ahead 10-9 after five minutes. However, the next 18:14 would prove to be crucial as the Scots went on a six-goal spree.
Ellie Hudson-Heck ’16 sparked the spree with two free position goals to put the Scots ahead. Shelby Stone ’15 quickly added to the rally with three consecutive goals of her own to give the Scots a 14-10 lead. Hudson-Heck scored once more at the 4:34 mark to give Wooster a comfortable five goal lead that would stand to be enough for the team’s third straight win.
Stone finished the game with a team-leading five goals. She was followed by Hudson-Heck and Szlachta who had three goals each. Ashley Parry ’15 also contributed two goals and an assist.
In goal, goalkeeper Isabel Perman ’16 made 10 saves to add to her 104 this season. Alison Schlothauer ’14 led the Scots on the defensive side with an impressive five draw controls, two caused turnovers and two groundballs.
With the victory, the women punched their ticket to the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament where they took on undefeated DePauw University (12-2, 8-0 NCAC) in the semifinal round. The game was played on Wednesday in Springfield, Ohio after press time.
