Over the last two weeks, students indulged in copious amounts of entertainment. Last week the dedicated soccer team premiered their production of the classic Fiddler on the Roof on the fielding stage. While the production team was excited for opening night and the audience was obviously composed of proud soccer moms and dads the positive imagery ends there.
The cast was led by their captains onto the center stage where they repeatedly tripped over their cleat-like heels and ill-fitted hemlines. The fiddler set the pace with an off tune violin that led the team through a sequence of face-plants into turf. The constant fumbles weren’t exclusively delivered from the green team alone.
Bad coaching is so often the root of the problem and that night, it was the cause. From the stands the director’s critiques and calls from behind sightlines could constantly be heard and often times drowned out the lines and calls of the players. This made for a sorry audience, who aside from parents were apathetic fans with no team spirit. No cheers were heard that night and the overall reactions were less than enthusiastic. The cheerleaders might as well have left their pompoms at home.
And perhaps most notable and the biggest contributor to the low scoring game was the obvious drug use. The cast of sluggish teenagers was further impaired by their obviously baked demeanor. Lines were slurred and garish and the sweet daughters’ eyes looked as red as a blood-crazed werewolf’s.
The team limped off the field after they’d been dragged through the mud for both halves but not as roughly as the audience who’d been subjected to such a painful game. Entertainment might have been involved in most students’ spring break plans but if they watched this game, they had two-and-a-half-hours less.
