Although Wooster’s senior softball players did not get to play their final two home games on Monday against Heidelberg University as planned, they did close their season on a high note on Saturday with a sweep of Oberlin College on the road. The Scots brought their record up to 18-18 (6-10 NCAC) in their conference finale, beating the Yeowomen 4-2 in the first game and 9-1 in the second.
Gina Pirolozzi ’13 finished her career by pitching a complete game in the opener, giving up five hits and two runs while striking out three batters. Both teams went scoreless in the first five innings. Skye Patterson ’15 put Wooster on the board first when her sixth inning double sent Carly Schoenstein ’15 home for a 1-0 lead.
Oberlin’s Katie Pieplow gave her team a one-run lead at the bottom of the inning when she hit a two-run homer. With the pressure on in the seventh, the Scots’ batters came through in the clutch. Paige Goldberg ’15 hit a single to left field for a game-tying RBI. Soon after, Demi Hart ’15 hit a double that led to unearned runs from Goldberg and Erica Villa ’13, giving Wooster a 4-2 lead. Pirolozzi retired all three batters at the bottom of the inning to seal the victory.
Game two was far less of a nail-biter, lasting just five innings before the game was called due to a mercy rule. Jenn Horton ’13 earned the win in her final game, allowing just one run on six hits. Hart gave the Scots an early lead, sending Goldberg home on a double to left field for a 1-0 advantage in the first inning.
Wooster scored three runs in the third inning, starting with an RBI single to centerfield from Patterson. Soon after, Horton hit a sacrifice fly to score Schoenstein. Patterson made it home on a fielding error after the next at-bat, giving the Scots a 4-0 cushion. The Yeowomen got a home run at the bottom of the inning to make it 4-1, but that was all they would produce offensively for the rest of the day.
Wooster went through its entire batting order in the fourth inning to put the game away after Oberlin made a pitching change. Hart opened the scoring with a three-run homer to make it a 7-1 game. Schoenstein, Patterson and Horton all hit singles in the next three at-bats. With the bases loaded, Aundrea Atwell ’14 singled to right field to increase the lead to 8-1. Finally, Taylor Raybuck ’16 took a walk to send Horton home. After a scoreless fifth inning, the game ended on a run rule.
