Ohio executes man who stabbed Akron woman 138 times

On Tuesday, Ohio executed Brett Hartman, a man accused of stabbing an Akron woman 138 times. He maintained his innocence until the end.

Hartman was the 49th inmate put to death since the state resumed executions in 1999.

He had previously come within a week of execution in 2009 before a federal court allowed him to further pursue his innocence. His execution was delayed again by a lawsuit over Ohio’s execution policy.

Petraeus probe puts hold on NATO nomination

The U.S. top commander in Afghanistan, Gen. John Allen, is being investigated by the Department of Defense for allegedly sending inappropriate messages to Jill Kelley, the woman whose complaints led to the uncovering of former CIA Director David Petraeus’s affair.

As a result, President Obama put a hold on Allen’s nomination as NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander, awaiting the outcome of the investigation. Gen. Allen will maintain his post as the commander of U.S. and allied forces in Afghanistan, pending a Senate confirmation of a successor.

Satellite images indicate North Korea working on missiles again

Despite an embarrassing failed missile launch earlier this year, satellite images indicate that North Korea is pressing on with the development of long-range missiles. The images suggest that North Korea has carried out at least two tests of large missile motors since April. The tests have occurred at the same site of a failed missile launch earlier this year, where a missile broke apart shortly after launching. Officials in Pyongyang claimed the rocket’s intention was to put a satellite in orbit, though most countries saw this as an attempt to cover up a ballistic missile test.
