After another devastating loss against Kenyon College, the women’s basketball team looked to rebound in their eleventh straight conference game. The Fighting Scots were seeking their third conference win last Wednesday against Ohio Wesleyan (16-7, 9-5 NCAC), but ended up coming short once again.
In the first half Wooster found themselves down 19-12 but stormed back with a 12-0 run of their own. The teams held close to each other for the remainder of the half. Ohio Wesleyan went into halftime with a one point lead (35-34). Even though the game was close at half, OWU, similar to Kenyon, pulled away from the Scots with a final score of 66-51.
For the Fighting Scots, Maura Hall ’14 had an impressive performance with a double-double. She had 14 points and 17 rebounds in the affair. Karley Walker ’14 and Ashley Lindemann ’14 both reached double-digits as well, with 14 and 10 points respectively.
That Saturday the women looked to turn things around against rival Wittenberg University (12-10, 8-6 NCAC), but the game turned out to be the same story as the others.
Wooster stayed very close to Wittenberg in the first half, but they could not keep up the pace in the second half. Some key contributors in the first half were Sarah Abboud ’12, Jessica Wingen ’13, Maura Hall ’14, Samantha Sulzer ’12, and Lindemann.
The game went back and forth in the first half, but ended with the Tigers up five on the Scots. In the second half, the Tigers went on an 11-0 run which sealed the game and ended the Scots chance of a victory.
Both teams struggled from the three point line, but Wittenberg capitalized more often in the paint, allowing them to win fairly handily over the Scots.
Both teams also turned the ball over frequently. Wittenberg had 17 turnovers and Wooster had 21. The Scots were outrebounded by a 43-34 margin.
Wooster played at home against Allegheny College on Wednesday after press time. The Scots have just one game left as they look to fight for a win against fourth ranked Depauw University and finish out the season strong.
