Women’s swimmers win

The College of Wooster women’s swimming and diving team took home first place in the Veale Classic last Friday, blowing out Oberlin College 148-56 in the opening round and then narrowly edging Case Western Reserve University 122.5-108.5 in the championship. These wins move them to a record of 2-2 overall, with losses coming against Wittenberg University and Ohio Northern University earlier in the season.
The Scots’ men’s team has struggled to find its rhythm so far this year, losing in the opening round of the Veale Classic to Oberlin 129-100, and falling to John Carroll University 127-96 in the consolation round. They currently sit at an overall record of 0-4, with the other two losses coming against Ohio Northern and Wittenberg.
The women’s win in the Veale Classic was marked by an outstanding performance from Mariah McGovern ’14, who took first in the 100 and 200 freestyles in the opening round versus Oberlin. She then displayed her distance swimming ability with wins in the 500 and 1000 freestyles versus Case Western in the championship.
Morgan Hughes ’15, who was recently named NCAC athlete of the week, also contributed to the Scot’s win by taking first place in the 50 free against both Oberlin and Case Western and winning the 100 butterfly in the championship.
There were several impressive performances on the men’s side. Peter Parisi ’13 took home five first place finishes over the course of the tournament, with wins in the 50 free against both Oberlin and John Carroll, wins in the 100 breaststroke and 100 butterfly versus Oberlin, and a first place in the 200 breaststroke against John Carroll.
Alex LaJoie ’13 also contributed four first place finishes, with victories in the 100 backstroke and 400 IM against Oberlin, and wins in the 200 backstroke and 200 IM against John Carroll.
The swimming and diving team has their first home meet this Saturday, Nov. 19 against Westminster College.
