Scots lose in NCAC Tournament to Wittenberg

The College of Wooster’s volleyball team season came to an end this past weekend, as the Fighting Scots fell to rival Wittenberg University in the North Coast Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament.
The Scots (22-10, 11-5) finished the season after a straight set loss. Wooster notched its second highest win total of the last 27 years this past season and had three players receive All-NCAC honors.
Captain Lizzi Beal ’12 notched first-team All-NCAC honors this year after posting the best statistics of her career. Beal set the Wooster record for most service aces in a career, 153, after posting 49 this season. The four-time All-NCAC honoree also added 158 kills, 273 digs, and 34 blocks.
Zoe Zwegat ’14 was placed on second-team All-NCAC after leading the league in blocks with 117. Zwegat also recorded 191 kills and registered a kill percentage of 24.8 percent.
Coming off of a 2010 season in which she garnered second team All-NCAC honors, libero Kelley Johnson played her way to honorable mention status. Johnson led the team with 576 digs.
Wooster will say goodbye to three seniors who played integral roles on the team this year, including Beal, and outside hitter Sarah Hawke ’12, who recorded 93 kills in 2011 on her way to a kill percentage of 23.3 percent.
Hawke also added 27 blocks on the defensive side of the net. Margaret Raabe ’12 played a defensive-minded role and added 87 digs on the year.
After an exciting season in which the Scots made the NCAC tournament and once again reached the 20 win plateau, Wooster will return with a strong core in 2012 and will seek to reach the top of the NCAC standings.
