Sports Editor Matt Magoon sat down with men’s soccer player George Skelly ’14, who has scored two goals in the Fighting Scots’ final three games. He was named NCAC Player of the Week on Oct. 24 after scoring a game-winner against Oberlin.

George Skelly

MM:  We are going to open with the normal pish posh. Where are you from? What high school did you attend? And why did you choose soccer at Wooster?

GS: I actually grew up in Wooster and went to Wooster High School for two years, but then my family moved all the way to Albuquerque, New Mexico. I spent a year abroad (in Belgium) after we moved, and then finished high school at St.Pius X in Albuquerque, where I played soccer. I’ve been playing soccer since I was a kid and I love the sport.

MM: How does it feel to be the only player on the team with red hair?

GS: (Laughing) — I haven’t gotten any ginger abuse so far on the road, so that’s good I guess. All of the players on the team have pretty unique hair though, for example [Taylor] Takacs ’12 has some nice flow going on, while Gabe [Lopez] ’14 has a Mexican style shaved head. I have reddish hair.

MM: You scored your first goal against Oberlin, how did it feel?

GS: I was ecstatic, but mostly because we won the game. The whole team had a great game against Oberlin, I just happened to get the goal. It was relieving to get the game winner though.

MM: NCAC Player of the Week is a pretty great honor, how does it feel?

GS: Honestly it feels pretty awesome. I’m happier about our team getting the win though, but it is always nice to get recognition. I feel like defenders don’t always make the headlines because there’s no stat for knocking an opponent down or taking the ball off of him. Hopefully it won’t be a one-time thing.

MM: What is your favorite food at late night Mom’s?

GS: Hands down the chili cheese fries. I thought the big cheese would be a hit this year, but it hasn’t really been a contender for me.
