Oberlin College had been enjoying one of its finest seasons in recent memory, sitting atop the NCAC East standings with a 7-1 conference record. This past weekend, the Scots came into town and spoiled all the Yeomen’s fun.

On Saturday, Justin McDowell ’11 and Matt Barnes ’11 led the Scots’ first sweep of the weekend against the Oberlin Yeomen. McDowell gave up only four hits and striking out 10 while pitching a complete game. Offensively, the Scots were led by Shane Swearingen ’10 and Stu Beath ’10, who each hit RBI singles.

In the second game, Barnes, who also managed to pitch a shutout while finishing off a complete game. He also struck out 10 batters and only gave up three hits. Zack Vesco ’12 led the Scot’s offense by knocking in three RBIs. Greg Van Horn ’11 hit a two- run shot in the seventh to seal a victory for the Scots as they finished off their Saturday sweep of Oberlin with an impressive 7-0 victory.

In addition, the Scots scored 29 runs in two games on Sunday, once again sweeping the Yeomen. Wooster opened the first game with eight runs in the first two innings. The Scots were led by Matt Groezinger ’10, who knocked in three RBIs with a double and a single. Luke Sutton ’10 also contributed by opening the second inning with a home run. The Scots would continue to add onto their total by scoring one run in the third, three in the fourth and one in the fifth.

Matt DeGrand ’10 provided the Scots with a very impressive start by pitching five innings and only allowing one earned run on six hits, bringing his record to 4-1.

Wooster also dominated game two of the double-header with an 11-4 victory. The Scots started off strong again, scoring eight runs in the first two innings. Van Horn led the Scots’ offensive onslaught by hitting a grand slam down the left-field line.

Groezinger and Vesco added to the Scots’ total with a pair of RBI singles, making the score 8-2.

Tyler Fugate ’11 led the Scots on the mound by pitching six and one-third innings and only allowing three earned runs on six hits, while striking out seven Oberlin batters. This weekend showcased the team’s balance both at the plate and on the mound as the team dominated Oberlin. This versatility will be key when Wooster seeks to compete in the postseason.
