The menís and womenís swimming and diving teams started the 2009-2010 season this past weekend with a sweep of Mount Union College. The men earned the win with a dominating 172-94 performance and the women outswam the Purple Raiders by a margin of 148-118.

The men followed their victory over Mount Union up with a hard-fought loss to rival Wittenberg University (165-135). The team was led by Logan LaBerge í10 and Eric Babbitt í10 who turned in impressive efforts in the Friday win and in a losing effort on Saturday. LaBerge was the victor in the 100 and 200 yard backstrokes, as well as the 200 individual medley against the Tigers.† Babbitt won the 500 yard freestyle and 200 butterfly against the Purple Raiders, and the 100 freestyle and 100 yard butterfly againt Wittenberg.

The women, who started the season with consecutive wins, were paced by two notable first-year performances from Claire Walsh í13 and Caroline Hansen í13.† Walsh led the way against Mount Union with victories in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle races. Hansen performed well in the Scots victory over the Tigers (152-148) with a 1000 yard victory last Saturday after winning the 100 yard breast stroke and 500 yard freestyle against the Purple Raiders.

Over the past six head to head meetings, the menís squad is 4-2 against the Tigers, with Wittenberg winning the past two meetings.† This is the first victory for the Scot women in the past six dual-meets.

The Scot swimmers will be back in the pool tomorrow when they travel to Ohio Northern University for a 1 p.m. meet against the Polar Bears. Last season, the women were victorious† (170-124) while the men suffered defeat (166-128).
