The College of Wooster Field Hockey team succumbed to a late comeback by the Tigers of DePauw University (4-2, 2-0 NCAC) on Saturday to lose 6-5. The Scots (3-4, 1-2 NCAC) led 5-4 at halftime thanks to goals from Kerry O’Connor ’17 and Rachel Wetzel ’17 and a hat-trick from Kayla O’Connor ’17. Forward Leah Prescott ’17 added three assists and goalie Lida Levine ’19 had a strong performance in net with 22 saves.
However, after half-time, the Scots were unable to maintain the offensive strength they displayed during the first half. They conceded two goals – one with five minutes left to play – to lose to the reigning conference champions.
Despite the loss, team-captain Kayla O’Connor ’17 was pleased with the team’s performance. The Scots played well offensively, scoring five goals against a DePauw squad thatup until their matchup with Wooster. had conceded just 10 goals all season.
“Our offensive unit played well,” Kayla O’Connor said. “We had good passing combinations in the offensive circles which led to quick goals.”
While there was plenty to be pleased with, Kayla O’Connor stressed that there was still room for improvement going forward – especially with competitive conference opponents coming up on the schedule.
The result of the Scots’ third conference game puts them into an important juncture in their season, with two conference opponents coming up, Wittenberg University (3-3, 1-2 NCAC) on Friday, and Ohio Wesleyan University (3-2, 1-1 NCAC) on Saturday.
