The College of Wooster men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams both rebounded after losses to Case Western Reserve University on Friday, by beating Hiram College on Saturday. The men’s team won by a score of 166-57, and the women’s team won by a score of 177-46.

Last Friday, the men’s team lost by a score of 70-167, while the women’s team fell after posting 79 points to Case’s 163. The meet was held at Case Western’s Veale Natatorium.

Despite the 1-1 record over the weekend, both the men’s and women’s teams have had strong starts to the season. They have each won three of their four dual meets. Their three wins have come against conference opponents.

“We had many season bests and lifetime bests over the weekend,” said team captain Margaret Goldsmith ’17. “That’s very hard to come by mid-season, due to the rigor of practice at this point in the year.”

For the men’s team, Salzman put together an impressive display against Hiram. With a score of 437.30, the senior now needs just one more NCAA Div. III qualifying score in order to compete at the Div. III regional competition.

Now with a 3-1 record heading into a dual meet this weekend with Westminster College, Goldsmith says the team is swimming well and gaining momentum and confidence.

“The team has gained a tremendous amount of confidence, speed and strength over the course of the season,” she said. “It’s exciting to see such a young team develop a great deal of potential early in the season.”
