A small trash can fire was discovered in Scovel Hall this past Monday, Feb. 1.

According to a campus-wide email update on the incident sent out by Director of Security and Protective Services (SPS) Steve Glick, the fire was discovered by Service Center staff at approximately 2 p.m. in the first floor men’s bathroom and immediately extinguished.

Although Glick confirmed that the fire this Tuesday was the same type of fire as the one which was discovered in a second floor men’s bathroom in Kauke Hall at the end of last semester, he said it was too early to tell whether the two incidents were related.

Both SPS and the Wooster Fire Department believe that the fire was deliberately set. Glick said that as in the incident in Kauke Hall before Winter Break, it looked as though someone had taken paper towels, set them on fire and put them in the trashcan.

The Service Center staff who discovered the fire reported that there were students in the hallway at the time of the incident.

“If any of [those students] saw something, that would be a great start,” said Glick. “They might have seen something without realizing it.”

As of now, SPS has no leads on the incident. Anyone with information regarding the fire is encouraged to contact SPS either directly at 330-263-2590 or through the anonymous tip line at 330-263-2337.
